5 Spotify Premium Features You Can Get Free — Plus One Thing Even Premium Can't Do

On Spotify Free, audio ads interrupt your listening every few tracks. They cannot be skipped. On mobile, full-screen visual ads appear between sessions. Together they add up to several minutes of interruption every hour — enough to break focus during work, workouts, or commutes.

SpotLite removes audio ads at the player core level, not just in the interface. This means they are not hidden or muted — they are not served at all. In-app banners and full-screen visual ad takeovers are also removed. What you get is an uninterrupted stream from the moment you press play.

Worth knowing: Region-locked tracks are still controlled by Spotify's servers. SpotLite removes ads and unlocks playback features, but cannot change which songs are available in your country.

Spotify Free limits you to six skips per hour across all playlists and radio. More frustratingly, playlists and albums on free accounts play in shuffle-only mode — you cannot pick a specific song and play it directly. Spotify's sleep timer is gated behind Premium. It lets you set a countdown — 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes, or until the current track ends — after which playback stops automatically. For anyone who listens to music, podcasts, or ambient sound while falling asleep, waking up to find the app has been playing for six hours is a real annoyance. The sleep timer solves this.

SpotLite adds this feature to the fullscreen player — tap the moon icon while a track is playing to arm the timer. The four preset durations are available, plus "end of current track" for when you want to finish exactly what is playing and stop. A running timer shows a countdown and can be cancelled at any time with a second tap.

One limitation to note: the sleep timer state is not persisted across app restarts. If you close SpotLite, a running timer is cancelled. Set it after the app is fully loaded and leave it running in the background.

How it works in the car

Plug in your phone, select SpotLite from the Android Auto app drawer, and pick any item from any node. Playback starts immediately on the phone. Steering wheel play/pause/next/previous/seek controls all work through MediaSession. The notification and lockscreen player also shows full controls and album art for one-handed use.

Cold-start note: If Android Auto launches before SpotLite has loaded, all three nodes load from cached data instantly — you will not see empty lists while waiting for the app to connect.

The official Spotify app for Android is around 100 MB to download and grows further after updates. On mid-range and low-end phones with 32–64 GB storage, a music app taking up that much space is a real consideration alongside photos, games, and system files.

SpotLite downloads at around 10 MB and installs at approximately 11 MB on-device. It achieves this by shipping a trimmed asset pack — splash variants, unused locales, and debug symbols are removed — while the audio engine and player behavior stay identical. The result is a full-featured Spotify client at one-tenth the storage cost.
